CBT has been proven to be very effective for the treatment of mild to moderate depression. CBT with medications for severe depression has also been proven to be effective.
A CBT therapist will help a depressed individual find alternative ways of thinking and encourage them to engage in activities that they previously used to enjoy. CBT is a collaborative process between the client and the therapist and thus requires consistency, commitment to do the homework, and willingness to examine the thought patterns on behalf of the client.
CBT is a short term therapy treatment. However, the number of sessions will depend on the severity of the individual’s condition. Change happens gradually so it is best not to have predisposed ideas about the session limits.
