Meet Our Team Of Addiction Psychiatrists

Overview

Involuntary functions such as breathing rate, blood pressure, heart rate, skin temperature, muscle contract, sweating, etc. are tracked by biofeedback therapy. Physical stress and heightened involuntary responses is the common consequence of alcohol withdrawal symptoms. With biofeedback therapy, a person can be trained to treat common withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, restlessness, depression, and chronic muscle pain.

The biofeedback machines feeds back to the person the current state of their body functions. Thus, if a person’s heart rate is depicted by a pulsing light on the computer monitor, and it is pulsing quickly – this can be an indicator to the person to engage in exercises that relieve their stress that will eventually lower their heart rate. In accordance, the pulsing light on the monitor will slow down as well. Some of the relaxation techniques that a professional can use in biofeedback therapy are – mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery.
