Overview

According to the ABC model of REBT, one’s reaction is not a result of the event or the situation but that of their irrational beliefs. This is why the goal of REBT is to identify in order to change the irrational beliefs, which automatically results in a change of the emotional reaction, in the case of anxiety disorders – anxiety and related behaviours.

There are three main ways in which REBT can help an individual with anxiety:
Problem-solving. If, for instance, someone hasn’t messaged you back and you have negative thoughts like they don’t like you that is making you feel negative emotion, problem-solving would help you explore the other potential reasons for their not contacting you – being busy, forgetting about it, them losing interest, etc.
Coping. Coping skills can help you deal with the consequences of your irrational beliefs. These skills could be meditation, relaxation, visualizations, etc.
Cognitive Restructuring. This can help you see the situation in a different light, such as someone’s losing interest in you does not imply that you are unworthy of love.
