Overview

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT) is one of the therapies based on the cognitive approach, developed by Dr. Albert Ellis. It helps people identify the irrational beliefs that they hold regarding themselves, other people, and the world around them, and alter them along with other negative thinking patterns that helps people overcome mental distress and psychological problems. REBT recognizes that thoughts, emotions, and behaviours are inter-linked; moreover positively changing one results in positive changes in the other two domains. It is based on the ABC model which is an acronym for: A – activating event or the incident that happens in one’s environment, B – beliefs, which implies the thought patterns or beliefs regarding the event, and C – consequences, which refer to one’s emotional and behavioural responses to the event.
REBT presumes that it is the irrational beliefs that a person has regarding an event that cause their emotional distress, rather than the event itself. These irrational beliefs often are absolutes that get reflected in statements such as “I must”, “I should”, “I can’t”, etc.
