A sense of belonging is provided through group therapy. Whereas an individual may feel like an outsider in a group of people who do not have similar mental or social challenges, he or she is more likely to feel accepted and understood by a group of peers who do.
Group therapy has been shown to be just as beneficial as one-on-one therapy, with the added benefit of allowing people to express themselves in front of others without feeling judged. Altruism and compassion in participants may be enhanced. As they watch others succeed, groups inspire hope in them.
